An up and down week for me

Hi Everypawdy!

It’s been quite the roller coaster ride for me over the last week…last Wednesday, I went to the doctor to get that drug stuff in my vein.  I was supposed to get a different kind of drugs than last time, but the doctor saw something funny going on with my heart and was worried that the new drug wouldn’t be good for me, so we did the same one again…mom and dad were kind of upset when they heard my heart was being funny, but I thought it was great!  I got poked more, which meant LOTS of extra treats and love!  Plus, I think I overheard the people talking about how now I only have to get the drugs in my vein 4 times instead of 6, so I’m halfway done! YAY!

I was kind of tired for a couple of days, but not too bad, and then we had a great weekend.  It was warm and sunny outside and we sat and hung out at the park.  I let mom brush me A LOT with the furminator, even on my hips.  I did a little bit of fetching with my super awesome dino cuz, but then I found the best thing ever…a ratty, disgusting old tennis ball!!! It was SO EXCITING!  I fetched a couple of times and then just kept it near me for the rest of the day.  I got a little confused about what to do when my Monkey Butt brother got to play with my dino cuz since I had the tennis ball….don’t the people know I’m supposed to get both?!?!  Sharing is stooooopiiiiiddd (like cancer)!!!!!

Yesterday I didn’t feel so hot, and I was doing the leaning over thing that I first did a couple of weeks ago, and was panting a lot and moving very slowly.  I had some tramadol, and that helped a little bit, but then it wore off in the middle of the night and I woke mom up at 2:30 in the morning with my crying.  She snuggled me and tried to put me back to sleep, but when that didn’t work, she went downstairs and got some tramadol, which she covered in some yummy coconut oil.  I enjoyed the coconut oil and spit out the icky pill..hehe!  Mom had to go back downstairs in the dark and get some more coconut oil and got me to take it.  Then this morning, I was moving even more slowly – I could hardly do stairs and I didn’t even want to go on my walk.  Mom and dad were scared because I was just lying on my bed with a sad, depressed, pained look in my eyes.  So we loaded up and went to the vet.  I perked up when we got there…remember, they have lots of treats!  Luckily, my heartbeat sounded good.  The doctor did do something to make my hip hurt, and I yelped to let him know.  Everyone was a little bit excited that my hip hurt because they think the acute pain might be from arthritis or hip dysplasia.  A few years ago, when I was a younger pup, but I had, ahem, a few more pounds on me, my hips were ouchy and my pawrents were all worried about arthritis or hip dysplasia, so it was weird that they were excited about it today.  Last time, I lost weight (booooooo!!) and my hips got a lot better, but that won’t work this time, so I’m going to start taking rimadyl again for the anti-inflammitoriness and keep up the tramadol if I need it and we’ll see what happens.  Hopefully that will help…if not, we have more investigating to do. 🙁  Luckily, we all LOVE my oncologist and can’t say enough good things about him.

My pawrents aren’t super certain that this is really what is going on….it doesn’t feel quite right to them, but we are hoping they are wrong.  Anyway, I was still really not feeling well and I just wanted to go home…but then we stopped somewhere.  I was a little bit annoyed at first, but then I got A CHEESEBURGER!!! OMD!!!!  It was my first one ever and it was amazing!!  My pawrents ordered it without a bun or anything, and they gave it to us wrapped in some papery green vegetable thingy…I carefully pushed that aside and INHALED my burger.  I accidentally got a little bit of the green stuff later while I was trying to lick the last of the cheese off of it, but I didn’t have much!  Teehee!  I’m not supposed to tell the Monkey Butts that I got a cheeseburger so shhhhh…. 🙂

Tomorrow….another adventure…my first acupuncture appointment!

Everypawdy, please keep your paws crossed that I feel better really soon!

xoxo Hollybeans

  1. Hi Hollybeans, I love your attitude. All dog! I don’t want to scare your mom and dad but have they asked the oncologist whether it could be bone mets? Initially our oncologist didn’t think Magnum’s pain was likely to be due to bone mets because it is not very common. If we had realised sooner we may have considered trying bisphosphonates. Just thought I’d put it out there just in case. I sincerely hope I am completely off the track.

    1. Karen, that is exactly what I am terrified of. Both the oncologist and my regular doc have said that it is very uncommon and would be very unlikely for it to have moved to her back hip…but I just have this bad feeling about it. This morning on her walk, she just yelped in pain and stopped walking in the middle of the street. That’s the second yelp/sudden pain she’s had…the having trouble sitting up or lying down makes sense, but I wouldn’t expect arthritis to cause these sudden, random pains. 🙁 We didn’t want to put her through hip x-rays etc., so we agreed to just treat the symptoms and see if it makes a difference and then go from there…but I don’t know how long I can hold out before I have the x-rays done. How long after Magnum started showing pain did you realize that it was bone mets?

    1. Our new mantra is going to be “focus on the good days, focus on the good days, focus on the good days….” 😉

  2. Holly,

That sounds like a pretty full week….let me know how the acupuncture goes and if that helps you feel better. Its supposed to be fantastic! Wonder if you get a burger every time you go to the doctors now? This could be a great deal!! We want you to feel good all the time and all night too. We are thinking good thoughts and sending them your way!

    All our Best,
    Suzie and Rizzo

    1. Thanks for sending some good thoughts! I SHOULD get a burger every time I go to the doctor…I’ll have to work on my mom. The acupuncture was fantabulous! I’m not sure yet that it has helped with pain, but I don’t know the last time I was so relaxed. It is completely worth it just for a few minutes of complete calm!

  3. oh holly, sounds like you are keeping all the doc’s guessing…nothing more fun that confusing the humans!! hope you love the acupuncture – going to get ‘needles’ was the favorite-est thing for both jane and gayle. maybe there will be another cheeseburger in your future real soon!!

    1. I am driving them crazy! hehe…my mom doesn’t think it’s so funny though. She thinks I should stop hurting and having symptoms and stuff, but it really is so fun to confuse them!

I was nervous about those needles, but now I think Jane and Gayle were pretty smart…it might be my new favorite-est thing.

  4. Holly – I’m so sorry to hear you are having pains! I hope the cheeseburgers make the pains go away. I bet they do! Our Abby loved her Flying Dutchmen (a double cheeseburger w/ no bun, but with none of that silly green stuff!). They were one of her favoritest thing.

I hope the needles help. And more cheeseburgers. Those would help too.

Your mom is right to focus on the good days – just like I bet you do.
    Hang in there gorgeous baby,

    1. Next stop….In N Out! I had seen you post about Abby’s love of Flying Dutchmen, but I didn’t know what they were.
